Sylvie Fleury

is a prominent contemporary artist, with bold and innovative techniques, Fleury urges viewers to grapple with consumerism's charm and excesses.

Fleury's art has gained international acclaim. Her works are exhibited worldwide, including MAMCO in Geneva, the Art Sonje Center in Seoul, MoMA in NewYork, ZKM in Karlsruhe, and the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg.

In 2017,

Manhattan gallery Salon 94 held Fleury's solo exhibition, Eye Shadows. This series of works refined her recurring themes of consumerism, art history, beauty standards, gender, and art commercialisation. In a Vogue interview, Fleury explained her inspiration for supersizing makeup, seeing makeup comps as abstract paintings. Presenting existing objects in new ways to create both abstract and figurative art.

Fleury

strongly supports the idea of makeup as art. By removing makeup from typical settings like stores and placing it in art galleries, along with other strategies, she transforms cosmetic objects into art while recognising their commodity nature. Fleury eliminates the visible branding, brushes, and mirrors from her makeup related artworks. The absence of mirrors forces viewers to focus on their interpretations, rather than treating the works as makeup products. This prompts viewers to reflect on their relationship with beauty standards and consumerism.
