Preface- Ignite the sparks of Independent Watchmaking

We're proud to showcase a selection of six unique pieces made for The Lavish Attic
in the Phillips Hong Kong Watch Auction: XIX

Born of a singular desire to bring to life exceptional creations without restraint, independent watchmakers thrive on owning their freedom. They resist the promise of resources and networks of global luxury groups to safeguard their imagination and allow their creativity to run wild. The independent journey is difficult and lonely– it’s a path that an audacious few have ventured down, with even fewer of them coming out on top.

When I established a wholesale company with the aim of introducing independent brands to Hong Kong in 2005, it was
in a world without social media, e-commerce and so-called influencers that we’ve become accustomed to. It was a time when adding an independent watch to a collection was as much a purchase as it was a thrilling treasure hunt reserved for the true horological fanatic.

Noticing a disconnect in the market between genuine watch collectors and the fast-growing independent watchmaking community, I thought long and hard about a concept that could unite these like-minded souls. In 2013, The Lavish Attic opened its doors, providing an intimate space for showcasing talented watchmaking artisans and their exceptional designs to a broader audience.

Conceived as a lounge space where collectors can gather and share their experiences, The Lavish Attic fulfilled my dream of facilitating an atmosphere that was at once an oasis of calm and an enclave for horological excellence. With music in the background and decorated with plush furniture, the welcoming space has fostered an ecosystem for collectors to explore the many brands with our team in an unpretentious and relaxed manner.

For the past decade, The Lavish Attic has become a hub where independent watchmakers from around the world gather to find an audience among the city’s aficionados and the horologically curious.

We are extremely blessed and immensely grateful for the invaluable contributions of the independent brands we have partnered with over the past 11 years. These artisans, each with their own unique voice, are collectively enriching the watchmaking landscape and challenging the conventions of what a brand can represent. Why do we still yearn for watches in an age dominated by smartphones? The answer lies in the dream and passion for creating something exquisite. A timepiece is not merely a functional object but a work of art. Each of these intricate machines is a testament to humanity’s relentless appetite for excellence and our desire to make a thoughtful impact on the world.

We gathered a small group of watchmakers representing an exciting mix of horological artistry in this celebration of the independent spirit. Lang & Heyne, for example, exemplifies the enduring legacy of traditional Dresden craftsmanship whilst paying homage to the timeless elegance of the pocket watch. Konstantin Chaykin, hailing from Moscow, has firmly established himself within the Swiss watchmaking world with his uniquely whimsical style. Marc Newson’s iconic Hourglass, re-imagined by De Bethune, presents a contemporary masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of traditional horology. Louis Erard, renowned for its affordable luxury, has collaborated with numerous celebrated artists to create timepieces that express creativity through impeccable craftsmanship.

Reservoir is recognised for its retrograde minute and jumping hour functions re-interpreted in the style of automobile gauges. Holthinrichs, the youngest brand in our project, has captivated the market with its innovative blend of dynamic architecture and horology.

I also want to express my profound appreciation for Phillips Watch Department for fostering a haven for independent watchmakers. This platform has been instrumental in elevating the visibility of brands that are deeply committed
to craftsmanship and aesthetic excellence. It is a privilege to collaborate with partners who are as committed to these values as we are. While Phillips Watch Department, the participating brands and The Lavish Attic are all relatively newcomers to the watchmaking scene, we share a common aspiration for growth and innovation. We remain true to our core values, even as we strive to adapt to the ever-changing world of horology.

More importantly, this collaboration is a manifestation of my dreams and what The Lavish Attic represents– a celebration of outliers that are unhindered by the industry’s confines. Each of these six creations represents the heart and soul of their creators and their steadfast determination to remain free and unburdened in their creative journeys.

The watchmaking landscape has changed immensely since the 1960s when creativity, rather than market demands, was the driving force behind innovation. I will always fondly remember Mr. Albert Hausammann, an industry pioneer who introduced many iconic brands such as Breguet, Vacheron Constantin, Jaeger-LeCoultre and later Harry Winston to Hong Kong

at a time when these maisons were still independent entities. It was a time when the most coveted independent brands we know and love today were still relatively unknown and perhaps not even conceived yet.

To give back to the horological community and nurture the next generation of watchmaking talent in Hong Kong,
a portion of the proceeds from this auction will be dedicated to Mr Hausammann’s foundation – the Albert Hausammann Foundation. We proudly support those with the courage to be different in a world that emphasises conformity.

As you explore the auction, I encourage you to take time to appreciate the artistry, craftsmanship and innovation these timepieces embody.

And finally, a heartfelt thank you to our friends and partners, who continue to support and honour the spirit of independent watchmaking.
